Spring Cleaning Roof Checklist

With the arrival of spring — you know what time it is. Time to haul the ladder out of the garage and do a little spring cleaning. You’ll need that ladder to climb up on the roof and give it a little attention as roofs do require attention. Spring is the perfect time to clean off any buildup that may have accumulated over the winter months, check for damage, and do a little maintenance.

Robinhood Roofing compiled a spring cleaning roof checklist to share our tips for best practices, and to give you a few ideas about where to get started.

Without further audio — here’s our spring cleaning roof checklist!

#1 — Clear Your Gutters And Downspouts

This is first on the checklist because the gutters are the area you get to first. Afterall, you have to climb over the gutters to get onto the roof, so you may as well go ahead and get that out of the way.

There’s no doubt that over the winter months the gutters accumulated debris. While many people do not like to clean gutters and downspouts, it is an important chore.

Gutters protect the roof from standing water by channeling water away from its surface and into a drainage system. Without functioning gutters, a roof becomes prone to leaks and thus, will deteriorate faster.

#2 — Check Your Roof For Any Damage

Don’t miss this item on the checklist. Many costly repairs can be avoided altogether by catching damage during a roof inspection. Look for any signs of damage or loose shingles. Shingles that show signs of blistering, buckling, curling, or just plain missing, need to be replaced.

Best safety practices dictate that any roof work, including inspections, should be done with a partner. In the event of an accident, having someone there to help is imperative. You can also hire a reputable roofing company to check it for you.

#3 — Clean Your Roof

Depending on what type of roof you have depends on how often your roof should be cleaned.

Residential roofing should be cleaned within five years of installation, then every two to three years following that.

Commercial roofs should be cleaned at least once per year and as often as four times per year. Flat roofs, as often commercial roofs are, tend to accumulate more debris and are more affected by snow and standing water.

When it comes to maintaining your roof, it’s best to enlist the professionals. Hiring a roofing expert to take care of inspections, repairs, and maintenance keeps you off the roof and saves your time, not to mention money.

#4 — Check Your Solar Panels

Rooftop solar panels require consistent maintenance. It is critical that they remain clear of any dirt or debris, and therefore, require a regular cleaning.

You will want a qualified Rooftop Solar Panels Contractor to check the panels, and be sure to read our previous blog to learn more about solar panels and the proper care of them.

#5 — Trim Nearby Trees And Prune Tall Bushes

Nearby trees can danger the integrity of your roof. Hanging tree branches can damage roofs, but is extremely difficult to prune without the proper equipment. Do not put yourself in danger by attempting this.

Trimming branches now will save you time down the road. Just think — less time having to clean your gutters!
