Top 4 Tips For Winterizing Your Roof

Summer is officially over, and it’s now the leaves are changing, the weather is cooling off, and for us here in Ohio, that means winter is upon us!

The weather here can change daily, but we do know that snow and ice can hit us hard during the winter months.

And when it starts getting chilly, what do we do? Close our pools, put away our patio furniture, put winter tires on our cars, and transition our homes and lives to get ready for winter!

All of that is great, but did you know that you should also add winterizing your roof to the list?

Winterizing your roof can be a simple process, but it saves you thousands of dollars in potential damage if properly taken care of!

So let’s talk about our top 4 tips for winterizing your roof and keeping your home, family, and belongings safe this winter!

Tip 1: Clean Your Gutters

A good rule of thumb is to clean your gutters when you change your clocks during the fall and spring months!

However, once the leaves start falling, it can be a good reminder to get on that ladder (safely) and clean your gutters and downspouts!

This will help all the melting snow flow freely, and it won’t overflow or cause issues with water damage around your home's foundation!

If you don’t believe you can clean your gutters safely on your own, you can hire a professional to come and clean them!

Tip 2: Remove Overhanging Branches

If a tree branch falls on your house due to the weight of snow or a bad storm, does it make a sound? YES, and it could potentially damage your roof, leaving your home exposed to the elements during the worst time.

If you have any overhanging branches from nearby trees, it’s best to clear those and any other vines that could potentially damage your roof.

Again, it is not recommended that you do this on your own if you are not properly equipped with the right tools and safety equipment!

Tip 3: Check Your Attic

What’s directly underneath your roof? Your attic or crawl space.

We know this might not be the most glamorous task, but it could save you money on both your heating bills and roof repair costs

Check your attic to ensure it’s still properly ventilated and insulated. Make sure there is nothing blocking the ventilation areas, and keep an eye open for signs of mold, mildew, and water damage.

If your home has any signs of these issues, call us because mold can also cause health issues if left alone long enough!

Tip 4: Get A Roof Inspection!

Annual or even semi-annual roofing inspections are vital to the upkeep, maintenance, and longevity of your roof.

You may have started noticing some missing or discolored shingles or have recently noticed some minor storm damage or even other signs of roof damage. These are not to be taken lightly and should be looked at by a professional. You never know what is lurking underneath the main exterior of the roof.

It’s also a good idea to have a professional roofing inspection during the fall because it will properly prepare your home for winter if there are any repairs needed!
